CHŁOPOMANIA BOOK
Editorial project about "Chłopomania".
Its historical and geographical context as well as representations in art and culture.
WHAT IS CHŁOPOMANIA?
Chłopomania is historical and literary terms for “peasant-mania”.
Fascination, interest in the peasant lifestyle and community, without understanding its essence, as well as the cultural and artistic trend among the Young Polish and Ukrainian intelligentsia in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
MAKING THE BOOK - FOLK INSPIRATIONS
In the book design and cover, I wanted to relate the Polish folk art and craft aspect of it. I designed an eclectic paper cut out form inspired by art motives of different regions in Poland.
Then I used it as an ongoing motive throughout spreads.
But the physicality of a cut-out paper was very important to me.
I decided to use it when making the front cover myself and glue it on. Sewing the book by hand was a conscious choice too.
I believe doing things manually was the right approach to the subject and suited for the Chłopomania concept.
